    YOUR VALUE CHAIN…
    … STARTS WITH US

Unfortunately, we had to shut down our production as of end of 2022. The Dimethyl Terephthalate production and the entire industrial site are on a stand-by mode effectively as of February 1st, 2023. We would like to thank all our customers, suppliers and partners for decades of good cooperation and regret not being able to continue it. Our best wishes for 2023 to all our business partners.

    PRODUCT OVERVIEW

    DMT in liquid form

    LIQUID DIMETHYL TEREPHTHALATE (LIQUID DMT)
    CAS NO. 120-61-6

Dimethyl terephthalate, or DMT for short, is a precursor for plastics obtained from p-xylene, methanol and air under the influence of a catalyst.

DMT is used as a starting substance for the production of linear, crystallisable polyesters that can be stretched when cold. It is primarily combined with ethylene glycol to obtain polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or with butanediol to obtain polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), which are then further processed to produce continuous filaments, staple fibres, foils, films and moulding compounds. DMT can also be used with monohydric alcohols to produce terephthalate esters, which are used as plasticisers. One such example is the transesterification of DMT with 2-ethylhexanol to obtain dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP).

In addition, dimethyl terephthalate is used for the exclusive production of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), which is an important component in polyesters such as PCT (polycyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) and polyurethanes. Another area where dimethyl terephthalate is used is the production of bleaching agent activators, such as those used in detergents.

DMT is manufactured using the company's own technique, which was developed in the 1950s at the Witten plant of Dynamit-Nobel AG, as it was known then. The most important basic material for the manufacturing process is para-xylene, which is obtained from crude oil. The para-xylene is oxidised with air at high temperatures in reactors, esterified with methanol, another alcohol originating from crude oil, separated in distillation columns, and the resulting crude DMT is cleaned using recrystallisation. The finished product accumulates in liquid form. It is filled at around 160°Celsius and transported to customers across Europe at this temperature in special tankers with suitable insulation and heating equipment.

Licensed systems around the world work with this Steyerberg technique.

    PBT OR PET GRANULES
    OR CHIPS

Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is processed to form granules made of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This is mixed with additives and further refined in a final processing step to create injection and extrusion moulding materials for the production of various components in the telecommunications, automotive, electrical and electronics industries.

    Examples include

    • enclosures and connectors for electrical engineering applications
    • mobile antennas
    • mobile phone keypads
    • plug connectors
    • airbag connectors and housings
    • cover frames for automotive head lamps
    • brake boosters
    • as well as specific industrial products such as pipes and hoses

In addition to industrial applications, these materials are used in a range of household products, consumer goods and personal care items, such as components for

    • steam irons, oven doors
    • shower heads
    • vacuum cleaners, coffee machines
    • furniture, tools
    • golf balls, ski and skiboard coatings

    PET FIBRES, FILMS AND
    COATINGS

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) also uses DMT for the production of industrial fibres, foils and films.

    These are then used as

    • films for food packaging
    • technical fibres, e.g. for truck and building tarpaulins
    • carpets
    • cables and cords

DMT is also used as a raw material in a wide range of copolyesters and polyester resins found in paints, films, cable insulation, adhesive raw materials and blister packaging.

    Solid DMT

    SOLID DIMETHYL TEREPHTHALATE (SOLID DMT)
    CAS NO. 120-61-6

In addition to liquid DMT, Oxxynova also produces dimethyl terephthalate in solid form. Unlike the liquid variant, which is a hot product due to its high melting point and is therefore classified as hazardous material, solid DMT is easier to handle and transport.

Solid DMT is obtained from cooled liquid DMT that is cast into a briquette mould to create small, briquette-like shapes, or broken down into small flakes.

Solid DMT must be melted in order for it to be further processed. Only then can DMT be used e.g. in a polycondensation process to make PET or PBT granules. Just like liquid DMT, the solid form of the product can also be used for a range of other applications.

Solid DMT is packed into big bags of 500 or 1000 kg. Smaller 25 kg containers are also available upon request.

    315 CO-free/DMT derivative

    DIMETHYL TEREPHTHALATE DERIVATIVE
    CAS NO. 68988-22-7

The product 315 Co-free/DMT Derivate is a mixture composed of production residues that result from the production of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). The composition of the mixture varies depending on the process parameters. The mixture consists mainly of several high-boiling components (HB), the chemical composition and structure of which are not known in any more detail.

315 CO-free is also a hot product and the hot melt is transported in special road tankers.

Applications of 315 CO-free include use in aromatic polyester polyols for rigid polyurethane (PUR) foams in building insulation.

    BME

    METHYL BENZOATE (BME)
    CAS NO. 93-58-3

The BME occurring as a side product during the production of Dimethyl Terephthalate is so called a technical grade with lower BME content. Depending on the operating parameters, the proportions of the individual components vary within the specified concentration ranges.

    The mixture is a distillate with a purity of 70 – 85%.

BME is used in the cosmetics and food industry as a colourant and fragrance, and in the agrochemical sector as a solvent.
